Dana Schmalenberg | Gem + Remedy
Sitting at SFO during a layover back from NYC, I stumbled upon Gem + Remedy via instagram. I loved the concept behind every aspect of these bracelets—gemstone promoted healing with color therapy in a modern dainty design! Each detail really fit my vibe, so I got in touch with Dana ASAP and we decided to collaborate on a bracelet together. Thus the FREE + NATIVE X Gem+Remedy bracelet was born (giveaway details below). Meet Dana Schmalenberg of Gem+Remedy.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT GEM+REMEDY AND HOW IT EVOLVED
I've been beading for over 20 years and always been interested in the power of gemstones.
Last year I made bracelets for all my friends as Christmas presents and they were a big hit. I've
been wanting to start a business that I could eventually turn into a full-on non-profit and I'm
hoping to grow this into that.
ENLIGHTEN US ON COLOR HEALING AND HOW YOU FORM THE BRACELET
I have a BFA and an MFA, so I've studied and made quite a bit of art in my day! I think that sort
of classical training has helped my eye, but specifically reading books on color therapy also
informed what colors I would put with different gems. There are many different books with
varying opinions, but I try and suss out the common thread that runs through them. I also use
my own intuition. I've found most colors evoke the exact feeling you think they would-- yellow is
positivity, blue is peace... etc.
I LOVE YOUR CONCEPT OF ONLY WORKING ON THESE PIECES WHEN YOU'RE IN A GROUNDED AND PEACEFUL STATE. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU
Everything-- animal, vegetable, mineral-- is made up of energy. Whatever we handle we imbue
with the vibrations of our own energetic state. Because these bracelets are going to be worn
right on the skin (our biggest organ) I feel it's important that my own energy is calm and
grounded. Whatever bracelet I'm making, for example a "Courage, Grounding", I think about
and feel those energies. I also cleanse the stones before I use them by leaving them outside in
THE COLOR AND GEMSTONE COMBINATION YOU'RE WEARING NOW
I always wear my Peace, Clarity, which is a light blue silk with blue topaz and white topaz. I call
these bracelets "intention bracelets" because it's my hope that when the wearer looks at them
they will remember what they're intending to bring into their lives. I've been busy lately and
having to make a lot of decisions, so it's a good bracelet for that.
HOW DID YOU COME TO SOURCE STONES FROM FAIR TRADE DEALERS AND WHY
I am still in the process of doing this. So far I've only found one dealer. I feel it's important to
know the people who are cutting these stones are working in a safe environment and aren't
being taken advantage of-- I think it affects the vibrational charge of the stones in the same way
my energetic state affects them. The stones that are verifiable fair trade are more expensive and
I imagine my prices will go up the more I am able to use only fair trade, but so far only about 30
percent of my stones are fair trade.

FAVORITE EATERIES IN LA
FAVORITE STORES IN LA
Woodley and Bunny on Third Street - They have all my favorite organic make up and potions
Lake on Silverlake Blvd - I love the owners taste in everything from scarves to shoes to dresses.
The Golden State on Rose Ave in Venice - it really has it's own vibe: hippie, beachy, sexy with a
whiff of 70s LA.
It's a Wrap - I can always find some little designer piece marked down 50% or more.
Heath Ceramics - Dishes are something we use and touch everyday, may as well have
something beautifully made that feels good in your hands.
I'm a big believer in "price per wear"-- meaning I'm only willing to pay as much as I think I will
wear it. I have a pair of Giuseppi Zanotti boots that have totally been worth their steep price as
I've worn them constantly for the last three years. That being said, I also have a few "mis-steps".
expensive dresses or shirts I've only worn a few times a year, then given them away as they
were just clogging up my closet.
HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR ZEN
On my kneeling meditation bench (highly recommended) or when I'm gardening or walking in
nature, when I'm holding one of the two sweet dachshunds that live with me or when I'm
laughing really hard with people I love.
