Always have something sprouting and soaking

In our house you will find bowls and jars of grains, seeds or nuts sprouting at all times. I’m such an advocate of telling clients, friends and family to always have something soaking.

Because Nature has set it up so that the nut, grain and seed may survive until proper growing conditions are present. Nature’s defense mechanism includes nutritional inhibitors and toxic substances that can be removed naturally when there is enough precipitation to sustain a new plant after the nut, grain or seed germinates. All grains contain phytic acid in the outer layer or bran. Untreated phytic acid can combine with calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc in the intestinal tract and block their absorption. This is why a diet high in unfermented whole grains may lead to serious mineral deficiencies and bone loss. The modern misguided practice of consuming large amounts of unprocessed bran often improves colon transit time at first but may lead to irritable bowel syndrome and, in the long term, many other adverse effects.

So, to undo nature’s natural protection and make grains, seeds and nuts nutrient's bio-available and abundantly absorbable, we soak!

Here is a soaking chart that will help sort the time with each individual grain, seed and nut. Because we soak + sprout so much, I have it down to an internal clock. But the guided soaking lengths are incredibly helpful at first.

And this incredibly hot weather makes for the perfect sprouting temperature for the warmer the weather + water, the faster the grain, nut and seed will germinate—making it ready for cooking or consuming raw MUCH quicker.

Still, why do I say to always have something soaking? Well planning meals around a soaking process can get tricky with our busy schedules. So at least every two days I’ll cook a large pot of lentils, quinoa, millet (and so forth) to have in the fridge at all times. Why? Because then I throw together my most beloved meal of all time—the bowl!  And having a grain, legume or seed on hand to use as your base makes the process quick and creative allowing you to focus on all the ingredients that you can throw into your bowl.

Let the fast, nourishing and delicious lunches and dinners begin!
