The Numbing Roadmap
Numbing can come in all different forms– anything from alcohol to shopping, sex, carbs, sugar and Netflix, to name a few. When in balance, these things can all be healthy pleasures in life, but if they are used in excess, they can turn into ways to "check out," or cope with sadness, anxiety, anger, resentment, procrastination...all feelings that are asking to be unblocked.
Signs You Might Be Numbing
While numbing can be an effective form of self-sabotage, it can manifest subtly. Below are a few telltale signs that you are avoiding your feelings.
Feeling like you’re in ‘highway hypnosis’ for hours at a time
Quick to anger, irritable, or impatient
Not allowing yourself to cry or fully process your emotions
Physical tension in the form of body aches, knots, or pain
Compulsive, unhealthy behaviors such as binge eating, over drinking, or attention seeking
