“A fever is where your own innate immune system is going to increase your body temperature in order to kill the virus.”

Today we welcome back Nutritionist & bean protocol expert Karen Hurd, to give us a scientific overview of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) and the ways we can support ourselves during this time. Karen dives into the fundamentals of this virus from a scientific perspective, and what it does to your system. She then covers the best ways you can aid your body in recovery from it. Karen also details the most effective ways to boost your immune system, and how heat plays a big factor. Lacy and Karen dive into the basics on a few other diseases and how we can best utilize foods to heal. We hope this episode offers a grounded source of support amidst the information overload we are all experiencing!

Although Karen's claims are well researched, she has a perspective which can be triggering to some, therefore, we encourage all to listen with the understanding that it is our intention to showcase this ideology as an alternative to the fear based perspectives of others in order to provide some grounded respite during times of uncertainty. We encourage you to find updates about the virus on the CDC and World Health Organization website..*

The virus can spread directly from person to person through droplet or contact transmission (such as a cough or shaking hands with an infected person who just covered their mouth from coughing, etc.) or from an inanimate object that has been contaminated by an infected person.  A coronavirus can survive 2 hours up to 9 days on inanimate surfaces depending on the surface and the temperature.  The colder it is, it has been seen that the virus can survive even longer—up to 28 days.

It is summer in certain areas where the virus has been observed.  However, the occurrence is a significantly lower number compared to the virus in the countries where it is colder (see the WHO chart in the link above).  Because the virus can spread directly from person to person, this will be the primary method of infection versus contracting the virus from a contaminated surface in those countries where the temperature is 30-40 degrees Celsius (86-104 degrees Fahrenheit). It is clear from the scientific data that the duration of persistence of the virus is reduced in these warmer temperatures. (G. Kampf, et.al Persistence of coronaviruses on inanimate surfaces and their inactivation with biocidal agents).

Let’s address “summer” in different countries. For instance, let’s say we are in Australia.   The high temperature in Sydney, Australia today as I write this email is 83 degrees Fahrenheit.  The temperature needs to be 86 or warmer to reduce the persistence of the virus.  However, in Kuwait at this moment (as I am writing this) the high temperature today was 87 degrees Fahrenheit.  Today the Sahara desert high is 83 degrees Fahrenheit but it’s normal hottest temperatures are 100-104 degrees Fahrenheit but won’t reach this until April through Oct.  All this is nice information, but is not the crux of the issue.

The crux of the issue is the temperature of the person that has been infected with the virus—or the temperature of the person that is attempting to prevent being infected by the virus.  Our prevention (outside of the hygienic measures/social distancing) and treatment is to raise our own body temperature.  We don’t need to raise it by much.  Just doing the things that I outlined on the Coronavirus protocol that we talked about on the podcast will raise a person’s body temperature enough to be protective and to aid the immune system in dealing with the virus if we are infected http://www.karenhurd.com/coronavirus.html.  We don’t have to have a 104 degree temperature (although that’s helpful) to defeat or prevent the virus.  We just need to be as warm as we can be.  The fever that occurs with the COVID-19 is a tremendous help, but we can defeat the virus at lower temperatures.  The warmer we are the more protected we are as the virus is so fragile and susceptible to destruction by heat, as well as the immune system works faster the warmer we are.  Even raising our body temperature a part of a degree will help.

Updated Resources From World Health Organization

Is COVID-19 the same as SARS?

No. The virus that causes COVID-19 and the one that caused the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003 are related to each other genetically, but the diseases they cause are quite different.

SARS was more deadly but much less infectious than COVID-19. There have been no outbreaks of SARS anywhere in the world since 2003.

Should I worry about COVID-19?

Illness due to COVID-19 infection is generally mild, especially for children and young adults. However, it can cause serious illness: about 1 in every 5 people who catch it need hospital care. It is therefore quite normal for people to worry about how the COVID-19 outbreak will affect them and their loved ones.

We can channel our concerns into actions to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our communities. First and foremost among these actions is regular and thorough hand-washing and good respiratory hygiene. Secondly, keep informed and follow the advice of the local health authorities including any restrictions put in place on travel, movement and gatherings.

COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in areas with hot and humid climates

From the evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in ALL AREAS, including areas with hot and humid weather. Regardless of climate, adopt protective measures if you live in, or travel to an area reporting COVID-19. The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by frequently cleaning your hands. By doing this you eliminate viruses that may be on your hands and avoid infection that could occur by then touching your eyes, mouth, and nose.
